We hadn’t had lunch and it was about 3:30 in the afternoon, so we went to the Essen Haus, a German-themed restaurant for sausage and beer. What happened there is still not fully understood, but basically Deech ordered some absurdly large plate of schnitzel by pointing at a picture in the menu. He got what he pointed at, which was definitely too huge to eat, so at that point it was living up to its advertising. However, he was charged $24.50 when he thought he was going to be paying $18.50, which is no mean difference. Meanwhile, Jay and I were confused because we hadn’t seen what he was pointing at when he asked for Grobenschnitzel, so we though he had ordered the $18.50 item and didn’t actually get it. The staff freely blamed a misprint in the menu and didn’t offer any compensation at all, which is weird, but the impression I get is that most tourists probably don’t look at the check at all and have no idea that there’s some kind of problem. It doesn’t help that the staff don’t seem all that empowered to help out their customers, and when the waitress was trying to figure out what was going one she brought out a person who for all I know could have been deliberately using an impenetrable accent to get Deech off her back. In any case, we gave up since it was only Deech getting screwed, and that just seems to happen from time to time.
I might as well also mention that while all of this was going on we were being distracted by a loud and tedious giant-cuckoo-clock presentation of the legend of the Pied Piper. I don’t really have any comment on that, though.
